When people mention free shooters and MMOs, one thing comes into mind which is having to deal with the endless loop of having to pay in order to win. However, Waframe is a major exception. Although it does have a freemium model, you don’t need to pay up in order to enjoy, and the developers don’t ask you to pay up every time you log in. Moreover, it has outstanding graphics and to top it all off, you get to play as a space ninja! How cool is that?
Jokes aside, you do get to play as a space ninja in Warframe, a being called the “Tenno” who is adept at wielding both blades and guns. The story is that you’re one of the survivors of a war in the past, and you’re drifting among the ruins in a cryostasis chamber. Your enemies are the Grineer: they will try to destroy you, so you must prepare yourself by learning the art of war and by mastering the ways of the Warframes under the guidance of The Lotus.
Your role in the war is simple: perform assassinations, spy on your enemies, and by sabotaging the Grineer. There are more missions like this, and all of them can be accessed on your ship, which happens to be your base of operations. Every time you log into the game, you will be immediately be facing your ship’s console, selecting missions, and choosing where to go in the solar system. Furthermore, your ship also hosts several facilities, such as armory and foundry that lets you store and equip weapons.
The draw of Warframe is of course, its frames. Basically, these are items which decide what your character classes are, and instead of being restrained to one, you can be able to swap them at will. For example, if you feel like playing a support role in one mission but want to be a main damage dealer on the next, you can change your frames. However, they’re not for free: you need to beat bosses or obtain them by completing the game’s quests.
One of the main complaints the game received is it being rather “grindy”, meaning, you need to constantly fight and level up in order to progress. However, even this tedious and at times, menial task is quite enjoyable, simply because the core mechanics and gameplay are nothing short of fantastic. With that said, the combat system is incredibly fluid, with numerous weapon options. The primary weapons you can use include shotguns, assault rifles, and sniper rifles. Meanwhile, secondary weapons are mainly melee, and these include swords, dual blades, hammers, and a combination of sword and shield. You can try these out to see which ones suit your playstyle best.
Should you start playing Warframe? Yes, it’s dubbed by many as one of the best free to play games out there. Its gameplay mechanics are excellent, and though the learning curve may be a bit steep, the process of mastering your preferred loadout won’t be too bad. It’s highly recommended, especially if you’re looking to play a great game with your friends.
