Back in the day, shooters were rather straightforward. All you had to do was purchase weapons and gear, then shoot your way to victory. As the gaming world evolves though, things change. We’re treated to hero shooters and others with gameplay elements like building huge forts and having the option to pilot a huge robot. The shooting genre is a bloated one, and Midair hopes to take a chunk of the large pie by giving it a twist: jetpacks. The concept isn’t original: Tribes by Hi-Rez Studios used this before but has since then focused their efforts on Paladins. In any case, Midair isn’t simply just a reskin: it’s a well-made first-person shooter with breathtaking environments and numerous gameplay elements that would make you come back for more. So, is it a game worth trying out? Let’s check out what it has to offer.

Midair is developed by Archetype Studios, an indie developer. Considering the lack of resources and a reputation, they have created a solid, free-to-play game. Although it is closely being associated with Tribes, this jetpack shooter is different enough to set itself apart. Its biggest appeal would be the amount of freedom it provides to players whenever they fly into the air. However, this takes a lot of time to get used to, especially if you’ve never played a jetpack shooter - like Tribes - before. Moreover, shooting down enemy players zipping through the air isn’t exactly easy. This element may feel a little clunky at first, but once you weather the learning curve, you’ll be all set.

A great deal of customization is present in Midair and you will need to decide what to prioritize when you enter the battlefield. There are no preset classes: the game simply provides you with varied gear and weapons to choose from. You will need to consider whether to prioritize defense or speed or firepower. Considering that it is a sci-fi game, there are laser weaponry, explosives, and deployable turrets. The options let you adhere to certain playstyles, giving you numerous combinations to try out.

Like most shooting games, strategy is needed to swing the battle in your favor. The battles in Midair are rather huge: 16v16 players can make the air a little crowded with laser blasts and explosions. Thankfully, the maps are sizable enough to feel rather open, and you will need to cover great distances to attack the enemy base. Note that the main mode is capture the flag, which means there needs to be players focused on both attack and defense. Note that before you take the enemy flag, some defenses and generators need to be taken down. Speedy and lightly-armored players need to be accompanied by those wielding heavy weaponry when attacks commence. There are also armor and energy elements to manage. Do you keep spending fuel in your jetpack or simply stay in place to get a better shot at a fleeing enemy player with your energy-based weapon? Those are one of the questions you’ll need to seek answers to. There are also vehicles you can ride and launch attacks from.

Overall, Midair is arguably one of those must-try free-to-play titles that you can’t help but support. It’s a well-made game with a decent amount of content and beautiful graphics, with more updates coming soon. It’s worth playing, and it is definitely worth giving a shot if you’re looking for something new to spend your time on.
