Look to the Left or look to the Right before you run, shoot all your opponents and have lots of fun.
Hear your footsteps as you run from area to area within the map but be careful as someone might suddenly pop up behind or in front of you and take the score for him or herself.
Feel the adrenaline rush as you run, jump and shoot your way through map after map of complex levels and obstacles while your opponents try to make target practice out of you.
Imagine yourself playing a game just like CounterStrike but in another way. Unfortunately, you can only shoot sideways, in fact , everything is sideways although almost all the elements of a traditional First Person Shooter are there.
Brain/Out is a Third Person, 2D side scrolling Rage shooter where you play online against other players via Team Play or Last Man Standing game. Playing the game feels so much like an FPS at an entirely different level since the game play is very much similar in design and execution.
Developed by Desertkun, the game takes place in a former Soviet state where Mercs and Marauders fight to stay alive and earn cash with every kill. The game has a large arsenal of weapons to choose from aside from several multi-level maps guaranteed to keep you on your toes as you move around and up the game ladder.
There are three game modes available, Normal, Domination and Death Match. Normal mode is a team based death match where you have to capture spawn points in the map that will aloe you to choose where you want to spawn. Each team however has a limited number of spawns and being killed over and over again will deplete the remaining supply of spawns. When this happens, the team which still has spawn points left will win the game.
In Domination, you will have to capture points on a map for a given set of time. The team that has the most point wins when the timer runs out. Death Match is just that, a free for all no holds barred last man standing game where he who has the most kill wins the match.
If you’re used to playing FPS online, the game play may somewhat look familiar to you. The movement scheme is easy to learn and lets you run and jump across the map while avoiding the weapons fire of your opponents and shooting at them in return. Aspects like footsteps, enemy line of sight detection, camping, strafing, evasion including doubling back and other tactical moves apply as well. Other features may differ and stand out like falling off a ledge, building or level and not taking any damage. Ranking is also irrelevant as though you rank up depending on how long you have been playing the game, this doesn’t affect any match making skill as everyone starts at equal footing at the start of each match. You do however earn in-game cash and bonuses to upgrade and purchase better equipment and other available game options. Pay attention to containers and caches throughout the maps as they contain items that you may find useful during game play.
There are a number of weapon selections available for the game. Thwsw are displayed in the weapons or inventory selection screen. You can highlight your weapon of choice (provided it's already available to you) and the weapon's stats will be displayed. This include characteristics such as Recoil, Reload Time, Damage and Fire Rate among others.
Weapons can be upgraded as well as you progress through the game. This include such things as decrease in reload time and recoil, adding a scope/sight, fire rate, suppression and increase in accuracy among others. Weapons include various rifle models, sun machine guns, shotguns as well as pistols and yes, a knife. It's just like selecting weapons in CounterStrike.
As per inventory, you can carry a Primary Weapon, a Secondary Weapon, Health Pack, grenade and extra ammo. Also, you can drop your weapon and pick up the weapons that your opponents have dropped on the field.
Also, the sound effects are great, maybe not excellent but never the less cool especially the weapon sounds Ratatatatat...as if you're playing an FPS. You can also hear your thundering footsteps as you move from one location to the another. The graphics are cool for a 2D rage shooter/ side scroller and at par with today's graphic standards. Game play is intense and the maps provide multiple levels and obstacles providing loads of jumpy challenges even for the most jaded of players depending on the online crowd you are playing with and how long they have been playing the game. The music provides just the right atmosphere for a combat shooter game.
The game is free2play on Steam for the PC but it really depends if side scroll 2D gaming is still very much your cup of tea. Side scrollers have been popular since the 80's and 90's before transferring to the mobile gaming world. Brain/Out will take you back to those days when Contra was the name of the game. So, whether you're a side scrolling fan and veteran or would simply like to try it out, why not give the game a scroll and practice aiming and shooting in third person mode… sideways.
