The task of coming up with something that is original as possible has for most of the time plagued the gaming industry. At this point in time down the evolution of computer games and gaming in general, originality has sort of given way to uniqueness as what separates one particular game from the others. Taking features from time tested successful formulas in game design and combining them into an experience of its own is one way of achieving it. After all, you just don’t create another Tower Defense game, Strategy or First Person shooter, you have to bring something different and new to the table.
Block N Load is one such FPS game. It uses a combination formula which contains time tested game play attributes like building, strategy, tactics, first person combat, social gaming and loads and loads of laughter. What the developers did was to combine aspects of Minecraft and Team Fortress 2 into a very successful mix that is so fun and addictive to play. However, it requires a strong team based participation in order to take full advantage of the games combined properties.
Block N Load though still new, will still need several revisions and the growth and buildup of a gaming community. At present, the matchmaking properties of the game still has no implementation and teamwork is difficult to achieve without audio server communication. In short, online friends who can talk to each other have to form teams which will play a 5 by 5 match against other teams. Without this component, the game might fall short of many expectations.
This game has so much potential and has the making of a very successful Online FPS punctuated by it’s wacky and deadpan laughter that can be found in TF2. The aspect of tearing down and rebuilding your base at the start of the game using a somewhat similar method to Minecraft gives off a creative side to FPS. It ads an objective which is to protect the center of your base known as the Cube Core or the center of energy the hold your base together,
At present, there are around 14 characters you can play. They all have the same if not similar comical characteristics to their TF2 counterparts. An added plus though is that they can build, all of them. Each one has a unique building tool aside from a set of gadget weapons available at hand. Likewise, available building blocks are unique to each and every one. Each character uses his or her building tool to break down walls, blocks and other structures and replace them with the building blocks they have. Each one also has a special block which they can use that performs a special function in the game.
Building is done Minecraft style placing blocks on top of one another or digging to build tunnels and basements. Devices that perform certain tasks like jump pads, traps, turrets, mortars, health blocks and even portals and teleporters can be placed at certain locations to aid team members or deter the enemy from getting to the core. Take for example Kira-Chan the cute Jpop Assassin; she uses her special MYDIGGINGPAL.APP tool to build as well as being able to build her PopStar Portal to help her team teleport from one location to another.
At the start of each match, you will be given time to tear down and rebuild your base and scatter enough traps and defenses around to protect the core. Everyone has to build fast for when the match begins, like it or not, your opponents will be heading for your base. You can always assign someone to be left behind to watch the cube and continue laying traps. The bulk of the team must then focus in destroying the enemy’s Cube Core.
What makes the game so fun in addition to building on the maps are of course the characters. Absurd humor together with lots of tongue in cheek jokes never seem to run out of supply. The weapons are as insane as the characters and everything looks more like a cartoon as compared to TF2. Of course TF2 has already proven its own brand of comic humor in the annals of gaming history but Block N Load starts looking more and more like its successor.
Game play is fast and furious, good graphics, good sounds with loads of uncontrollable giggles as you go up against characters like Kreepy the Killer Klown who keeps throwing Bananas at you to Gogwheel who can shred you to pieces with his mini Gatling canon. The other characters included in the current roster are Astarella the Space Gal (yeh, sure, Barbarella…), Nigel Purdey-Longshot the big game hunter, Roly Poly Fat Fat the rampaging Hamster (yes, a super intelligent rodent), Sarge Stone the Rambo commando, Sweet Science the King of the Dirty fight, Yuri the Yeti the Soviet Yeti Warrior and Deep Thinker, Tony Turreto the Italian Engineer who happens to be Union Made and Professional Grade, Vander Graaf the shocking base builder, Dr. Eliza Doolally PHD in AoE, Dream Genie the Lady of the Lamp and of course O.P. Juan Shinobi the Ninja Master.
So, if you can get your friends together whether they be Online or personal ones, why not try having some good natured camaraderie with lots of laughter and fun. Block N Load is available Free2Play on Steam and you really don’t have to spend if you don’t want to. However, you can always buy additional skins or some other item that are not default with the game.
